My Policeman: Are you Going to Watch It?

by | Nov 3, 2022 | Mixed-Orientation Relationships

I recently finished reading My Policeman. Wow, it was a hard read as a straight spouse! Now that it’s being turned into a movie with Harry Styles at the helm, it will likely gain a lot of attention.

There are a few things they get “right”, but those things are overshadowed by some issues that made me grit my teeth. By the end, I felt like throwing the book at the wall. It was frustrating.

My Policeman is a fictional story about a 1950s mixed-orientation marriage. My concern is that people may assume that these relationships don’t happen anymore now that homosexuality isn’t a crime in many countries. This movie may perpetuate that myth. It may also perpetuate the idea that older closeted gays get a free pass for marrying a straight because it was much harder back then (which it really was!). However, the impact of marrying someone who is not telling you who they really are, and giving you a chance to make an informed decision about what you want, is significant.

Here’s the official trailer for the movie.

How about you? As a straight spouse, will you watch it? Or will it be too triggering, and close to home?
